The route is 1.73 miles round the town and I'll be using our lake for practice, which is 0.8 mile. I figure that 3 times round the lake makes up for there being a wee hill in the town route.
27 December -
walk 1 lap of the lake with a friend. Timed at just over 13 minutes.
29 December -
aim to walk 3 laps, see how it goes. Supported arm with other arm to stop bouncing, didn't help. Stopped to talk to a friend and pain relieved a bit. 1 lap was just under 16 minutes.
went to run club and managed to do 20 mins non-stop, at different speeds, but glad to have finished.
Pedometer showed I walked 4.44 miles

aim to walk around the shops with a friend, not paying much attention to speed or distance, see how it goes.
Pedometer showed 1.95 miles. It was enough to finish me off.
31 December -
a relax day, because tomorrow I'll be going to town to watch the New Years Day dip, which just happens to be on the Fireman's Run route, so I was going to do the whole route, start & finish at the lifeboat station, instead of fire station.
I imagine that I'll be wanting to have a rest day before the big race as well.
1 January 2015! -
big plan was foiled by the absolutely disgusting weather, nearly blowing me over a few times on the way to the NYD dip.
Never mind doing the whole route, my arm is aching just from the pressure of fighting the wind for the 2.13 mile return walk down there.
I guess that counts as a practice because it's longer than the 1.73 miles I was going to do.
I really hope it isn't that windy on the actual night!
2 January -
Had a good visit to the hospital, starting physio soon!
Decided to go for a walk round our local wildlife park to celebrate.
It was a cold day, but managed to clock up about 4.30 miles in total, and spent about 2 hours in the park, which included sitting for lunch, so it's boosted my confidence for the Fireman's Run!
3 January -
In eager anticipation, I carried some bottles down to the bottle dump, then stopped off to pick up the veg from the vegman & carried them home. I was disappointed to find that it wasn't enough mileage, only 1.45 miles. But it was an hour walking round. Arm still aching, but I'm quietly confident that I can do this run (walk) and get home to die on the couch later. Only 5 days left. Tomorrow I hope to do the test run (that I didn't do on NYD).
4 January -
Fantastic weather today, so I was really keen to get out and try the route. Conquered yet another task - tied my own shoe laces today! My goal is to be able to do the Fireman's Run in less than 45 minutes because that's the slowest time of the 3-lappers, and as I'm only doing 1-lap, the marshals won't be out any longer than they would have to be anyway. So, pedometer on, worked out how to use the timer and away I went (I counted the .47mile walk to the start as my warm up) and I managed to do it in 32.37!!! and no pain! Really pleased with that. Heading for a well earned lazy rest of day.

5 January -
Pushed myself a bit too much today. Decided to tackle some housework - took me 2 hours to do the bathroom! Then I sorted some dvd's to give to a charity shop and had planned to do some wii fit step aerobics, but my arm was aching pretty much all afternoon. I had my pedometer on but only managed 1.10 miles (not bad as that was only walking round inside) and I did quite a bit of crochet (singlehandedly, and a learner, is not easy!). I didn't even go to run club, fell asleep on the couch. Well, at least I know what NOT to do on Thursday daytime! Still feeling confident I can do this race.
6 January -
I met up with a friend who wanted to start walking, so we did two laps of the lake, she was shocked to hear that just walking and nattering, we had done 1.60 miles! My arm could have coped with a 3rd lap, and I was happy just knowing that. It was nearly the distance of the Fireman's Run. In the afternoon I walked into town and had lunch with a friend. All this walking around is definitely helping, but in my mind, it's nothing compared to the level of exercise I'm used to doing.
There's road works near where the Fireman's Run starts, so the route is changing and they need more marshals for it to go ahead. I have talked my significant other into marshalling for us, who wanted to come down anyway, just to make sure I was okay.
| single handedly crocheting to keep me busy |
What a rubbish day, the weather was awful - nearly got blown over a few times walking into town! Really hoping it's not like this tomorrow night, because that extra pressure on my arm makes it ache a lot.
I walked down to Weight Watchers as well and then onto the circuit training, where I managed (1-handed) to do press ups (against the wall), sit ups & crunches, lunges, squats and side plank. I guess I walked about 4 miles today.
8 January -
Well, it's today! Must relax today & not do too much....says the gal with a load of washing on, and a friend on the way to mooch the shops. I should just stay away from the crocheting and I'll be fine.
I walked my little socks off and did it in an impressive 28.21, over took 2 dog walkers and came 38th out of 38, which meant I beat the 25 people who didn't show up at all! It ended up being 1.84 mile because of the road works, How chuffed was I?!?
I'm officially having the weekend off.
